My work often deals with how geography, climate, and landscape impact our understanding of ourselves. Living in the post-industrial Midwest, my latest bodies of work have used imagery representative of my town - places that I walk by everyday. In the aftermath of the 2016 election, however, I’ve watched as a country that equates industrial jobs with white labor has fetishized the Rust Belt, and now this imagery feels collaborationist. I am struggling with contributing to the increasingly overwrought narratives of life in the industrial Midwest, and watching the meanings of symbols and images change beneath me has posed a challenge to my work. I'm currently working through these ideas in these images.
